Brittany’s small dream island

Detox for the soul

My first time in Brittany was also my first holiday on a French island. The ferry trip from La Turballe was already a little adventure. Early in the morning we started towards the horizon into this beauty. The name of this little paradise, where I could spend some very relaxed days, is Hœdic. The small but charming island is located in southern Brittany in the Bay of Biscay and has just 107 inhabitants, a few picturesque houses, a handful streets and a campsite. But what you will find here above all is peace and tranquillity as well as a wonderful nature and real dream beaches.

Relax, relax and….RELAX!

So if you want to relax close to nature and you can live without the comfort of a Hotel for a few days, then you will feel absolutely at home here. There are long sandy beaches, rocky bays, different flora and fauna, relaxed hiking trails and for in between a few cafés and restaurants with great regional cuisine, which are all recommendable. You should definitely try the Galettes bretonnes which, unlike crêpes, are made with buckwheat flour. My favorite is covered with mushrooms and goat cheese, extremely delicious!

Apropos hiking, the small island can be walked around in approx. 1-1,5 hours and on the way one discovers cute little bays to sunbathe or to jump into the (cold) water. Another special feature are the so-called menhirs (menhirs) which some of you surely know from the Asterix & Obelix comics . These were often set up as so-called boundary stones and you can find them in different places all over Brittany.

Sleeping in the middle of a paradiese

There is a basic but relaxing campsite at the entrance of the island. The price is absolutely o.k., especially if you consider that you can always have a stunning look at the sea. The only disadvantage is that there is little shade. This can be a bit unpleasant on hot days. We simply lay down on the beautiful beach and relaxed and cooled down there. The place is close to the entrance of the village where the ferries dock. There are several showers and toilets and there is a very respectful atmosphere.

À bientôt my beauty

All in all, I really liked Hœdic very much. I was able to relax on this small island, enjoy nature, swim, hike and eat very tasty food. After two days I was completely relaxed. I strongly recommend to do a digital detox as well, in order to get completely involved with nature. I can absolutely recommend the Île d’Hœdic. But I would also like to say that we visited it in midsummer. The weather in Brittany can change very fast. Take weatherproof clothes and a good tent with you to fully enjoy your stay.
